About Us

A Place of Worship, A Home for the Community

Wimbledon Mosque is more than just a place of prayer – it’s a cornerstone of the community, a vibrant hub of faith, education and service that has been at the heart of the local Muslim community for nearly five decades.

Established in 1976, as one of London’s first purpose-built mosque serving the mainstream Sunni Muslims, it has grown alongside its congregation, adapting to meet the evolving needs of worshippers and the wider community. Today, it stands as a beacon of unity, knowledge, and social responsibility, welcoming people from all walks of life.

Wimbledon Mosque is a thriving community centre offering marriage services, religious counselling, funeral (Janazah) support, and educational programs. It encourages learning and engagement, welcomes school visits and provides guidance to all who seek it.

Wimbledon Mosque is a registered UK charity, actively working to support local and international relief efforts. Through fundraising, awareness campaigns, and direct aid, we contribute to various charitable organisations that provide essential services both in the UK and abroad.

Present and Future – A Thriving Community Hub

Today, Wimbledon Mosque is a three-storey building with a basement, providing space for over 600 worshippers. The site also includes 10-12 parking spaces and outdoor prayer areas during peak times.

1976 – The Opening of Wimbledon Mosque

On June 25, 1976 (26 Jamadi Thani 1396 AH), Wimbledon Mosque officially opened its doors.

Designed by architect Jack Godfrey-Gilbert, the building took inspiration from Mughal architecture, blending tradition with the urban London landscape.

Early Beginnings (Pre-1976)

Before Wimbledon Mosque was built, the Muslim community gathered for prayers in a small property on Melrose Avenue.

Recognising the need for a dedicated space, planning permission was granted in 1973 for the construction of a two-storey mosque at Durnsford Road.

Pre-1976

As Wimbledon Mosque continues to grow, so does our commitment to ensuring a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible space for all. With an expanding congregation and an increasing number of community initiatives, we are constantly striving to enhance the experience of everyone who walks through our doors.

We are actively exploring ways to:

✅ Improve facilities for our female worshippers, ensuring better segregation, comfort, and accessibility during prayers and events.

✅ Enhance access for the elderly and disabled, making it easier for everyone to navigate the mosque safely and comfortably.

✅ Streamline facilities and crowd flow management, allowing for greater convenience and efficiency during busy periods such as Jumu’ah, Ramadan, and Eid prayers.

Our goal is to create a modern, functional, and welcoming environment that meets the evolving needs of our diverse community.

As we plan for the future, we welcome feedback, ideas, and support to help shape the next phase of Wimbledon Mosque. Together, we can ensure it remains a thriving hub of faith, learning, and unity for generations to come.
